Lupos Heartbreak Hotel was the place to be when 95.5 WBRU brought it’s first “Winter Warmer” to Providence to benefit Girls Rock! RI. The bill for the night featured female power groups that are currently topping the alternative rock charts.
First to perform was Joseph. The three sisters from Portland warmed the crowd with their pop folk sound. And their setlist wrapped with their recent hit “White Flag” as the room sang along.
The second performance of the night, was the highlight of the night for myself and many. The indie hip hop artist K.Flay, whose recent tune “Blood In The Cut” has gotten the attention it fully deserves, was next to take the stage. The multi talented music maven owned the audience from the first note of her Fender. All energy and attitude, she never missed a beat. K.Flay performed a smart, be it short setlist beginning with the grungy sounding “Hollywood Forever” that escalated the energy of the room from song to song until wrapping with “Blood In The Cut”. The only negative to her performance was that it seemed to end too quickly!
As the stage was flipped for the next performer, smoke billowed out from the fog machines at a rapid rate. By the time Warpaint took the stage the entire venue looked like the view from an airplane within a cloud. Colorful lights lit the silhouettes of the four piece psychedelic indie rock band as their sleepy-eyed downtempo sound hypnotized the room, a stark contrast to the high energy performance that preceded it. For a Wednesday it was a great way to bring the audience back down to earth.
Overall WBRU killed their first Winter Warmer and all for a great cause to benefit Girls Rock! RI. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next!
